The MSW Direct Advantage
Tell me about “Advanced Generalist”
Our online Advanced Generalist MSW prepares students to master multi-faceted roles for practice with individuals, families, groups, organizations and communities within diverse systems and settings. Our graduates engage multi-faceted roles as clinicians, group facilitators, supervisors, community organizers, advocates, and policy analysts. Through a set of elective choices, you may also gain specialized knowledge in an area important to your career goals or geographic locale. The concentration is very well suited for practice in rural, suburban, and stressed urban communities.
This means you will be able to work in many types of settings on social justice issues with people from all walks of life.
Is this an accredited program?
The MSW Direct program is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education. The Indiana University School of Social Work has been continually accredited since 1923. Your degree will be the same as our traditional degree.
What about liberal arts preparation?
Our program is grounded on a strong liberal arts foundation. Our practitioners are grounded in the values and ethics of our profession and support the dignity of individuals and groups including age, class, color, culture, disability, ethnicity, gender, gender identity and expression, immigration status, political ideology, race, religion, sex, and sexual orientation.
How is MSW Direct different from other online social work programs?
Many MSW online programs are only available within a state or region. MSW Direct is available anywhere! If you can connect you can participate!
Many programs are “hybrid,” meaning that you must often go to a campus for classes. In MSW Direct you only need to come to campus once for orientation and another if you wish to walk for graduation. The rest of the time is spent online with the exception of practica.
Many online programs are cohorts, and you can sometimes wait as long as a year for a course to be offered. All required MSW Direct courses are available in sixteen week long semesters for the fall and spring, and a thirteen week long semester over the summer.
Many online programs are “cohort” designed, meaning that you are part of a specific locked-in group. If you have to stop-out you may not be able to complete your degree or have to wait a very long time to continue. We just don’t do this! MSW Direct students can stop-out anytime without jeopardizing their work as long as they complete the program within five years.
Will I be a regular Indiana University student?
Yes! All MSW Direct students are technically enrolled as IU students on the IUPUI campus and have access to our library system. We enjoy one of the largest collections of online journals, books, and media in the world! The tremendous access our students enjoy is truly remarkable. As a result our online students enjoy considerable advantage, even in comparison with traditional students at other colleges and universities outside of Indiana University!
