Tuition and Financial Aid

The cost for attending the MSW Direct program varies depending on the length of time you are in school and on your residency status. Tuition and fees in the MSW Direct program are assessed on a per credit hour basis. The current tuition rate is $541.00 per credit hour for in-state students and $675.00 per credit hour for out-of-state students (visit our Office of the Registrar for details about residency classifications).

In addition to tuition, fees are also assessed on a per credit hour basis. See the Additional MSW Direct Cost Information section below for specific information about course fees. Advanced Standing students are required to take 39 credit hours. An administrative fee (currently $20 per credit) is assessed for the 21 credit hours that are waived for Advanced Standing students.

MSW Direct students should also plan for the costs of books and supplies. We estimate that your books and supplies costs for the duration of your program will total approximately $3,000.00.

You will also need to budget for one trip to campus to attend the required orientation session during your first week of classes.  The Indianapolis International Airport is less than 30 minutes from IUPUI, and numerous hotels are located close to campus for those needing overnight accommodations. Convenient parking is also available on campus. For in-state students, we estimate approximately $500 for the costs of attending orientation. Out-of-state students can estimate approximately $800. Orientation is the only required campus visit, but students are also encouraged to attend graduation at the end of their program!

Factoring in miscellaneous costs, tuition, and fees, the 60 credit hours required to complete the program will total approximately $40,800 for in-state students and approximately $49,200 for out-of-state students. In-state Advanced Standing students can expect to pay approximately $28,200 for the program. Out-of-state Advanced Standing students can expect to pay approximately $33,800 for the program. As a reminder, these figures are only an estimate and are subject to change. Your actual costs could vary based on future rate changes as well as your enrollment status, plan of study, and academic progress.

Financial Aid Information

There are a number of different options to help fund your graduate studies with the IU School of Social Work. These include Federal Student Loans, scholarships, and employer assistance. We encourage students to consider all resources to help make their education as affordable as possible. An important step in the financial aid process is completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA can be completed online at When completing the FAFSA, enter federal school code 001813 (Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis) when prompted. The FAFSA may be completed at any time during the year. However, some awards may require students to file by a certain date, so review aid applications carefully.

Students who have completed their FAFSA and been admitted to the IU School of Social Work will receive financial aid information via university email and the University’s One.IU portal. Students should monitor their account to ensure completion of all required financial aid steps. Visit the website of the Office of Student Financial Services at for more information. If you need assistance in completing the FAFSA or for general financial aid questions, please contact the MSW Direct financial aid representative at
